Prague (/prɑːɡ/ PRAHG; Czech: Praha [ˈpraɦa] ⓘ; German: Prag [pʁaːk] ⓘ;
Latin: Praga) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic, and the
historical capital of Bohemia. On the Vltava river, Prague is home to about
1.3 million people. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with
relatively warm summers and chilly winters.
Prague is a political, cultural, and economic hub of central Europe, with a rich
history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectures.
It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy
Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV (r. 1346–1378) and Rudolf II
(r. 1575–1611).

The Czech name Praha is derived from an old Slavic word, práh, which means
"ford" or "rapid", referring to the city's origin at a crossing point of the Vltava
river.

Another view to the origin of the name is also related to the Czech word práh
(with the meaning of a threshold) and a legendary etymology connects the
name of the city with princess Libuše, prophetess and a wife of mythical
founder of the Přemyslid dynasty.

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe.
Historically known as Bohemia.
The Czech Republic has a hilly landscape that covers an area of 78,871 square kilometers (30,452 sq mi) with a mostly temperate continental and oceanic climate. The capital and
largest city is Prague.
The Duchy of Bohemia was founded in the late 9th century under Great Moravia. It was
formally recognized as an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002 and became
a kingdom in 1198. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, all of the Crown
lands of Bohemia were gradually integrated into the Habsburg monarchy. Nearly a
hundred years later, the Protestant Bohemian Revolt led to the Thirty Years' War.
After the Battle of White Mountain, the Habsburgs consolidated their rule.
With the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the Crown lands became part of the Austrian Empire.
The traditional English name "Bohemia" derives from Latin: Boiohaemum,
which means "home of the Boii" (a Gallic tribe). The current English name
ultimately comes from the Czech word Čech. The name comes from the Slavic
tribe (Czech: Češi, Čechové) and, according to legend, their leader Čech, who
brought them to Bohemia, to settle on Říp Mountain. The etymology of the word Čech can be traced back to the Proto-Slavic root *čel-, meaning
"member of the people; kinsman", thus making it cognate to the Czech word
člověk (a person).

Old Town Square (Czech: Staroměstské náměstí [ˈstaroˌmɲɛstskɛː ˈnaːmɲɛsciː] or colloquially Staromák [ˈstaromaːk] ⓘ) is a historic square in the Old Town quarter of

The Orloj is mounted on the southern
wall of Old Town Hall in the Old Town Square. The clock mechanism has
three main components – the
astronomical dial, representing the
position of the Sun and Moon in the

astronomical details; statues of various Catholic saints stand on either
side of the clock; "The Walk of the
Apostles", an hourly show of
moving Apostle figures and other sculptures, notably a figure of a
skeleton that represents Death,
striking the time; and a calendar dial
with medallions representing the
months. According to local legend,
the city will suffer if the clock is

Her,

Her får du
 gjestfrihet.

På veien dit vi skulle ta veterantrikket
gikk vi forbi dette tårnet.

Vikárka´s history

Vikárka is a restaurant that has been here for centuries. In 1347, Emperor Charles IV gave the local vicar the right to brew their own beer. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, local beer was supplied to the entire Castle and its inhabitants, including Emperor Rudolf II, but also to alchemists who had their workshops in the local underground. In the spacious Rudolph´s foundry they tried to make gold and the philosopher's stone.

The famous Prague restaurant Vikárka was named after vicars, original inhabitants and members of the St. Vitus Chapter. It was founded in 1845 and has hosted thousands of visitors for about 180 years of its intermittent operation. However, one literary ‘guest’ stands out – the Prague burgher Matěj Brouček, the main character of the novels by Svatopluk Čech (1846–1908), who being drunk fell into the Middle Ages and found himself among the Hussites. He was saved by Mr. Würfl, the Vikárka’s innkeeper, from being burnt to death as he had found Matěj Brouček in a barrel in the yard and woken him to the present.

The Vikárka has also played an important role in modern Czech history. It was here that Presidents T. G. Masaryk and Václav Havel met with other statesmen and world figures in informal meetings. For example, a meeting of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from Tibet with representatives of Czechoslovak churches took place here. The Vikárka restaurant has also been popular with many artists, including Karel Gott, Benny Anderson (ABBA), Roxette and the Spice Girls.

The Vikárka restaurant has undergone the third reconstruction in its history, which lasted eight years. On the 22.1.2023 the Vikárka restaurant reopened to the public again.

Until the next operation:
God bless you

Both the Czech name Vltava and the German name Moldau are believed
to originate from the old Germanic words *wilt ahwa 'wild
water' (compare Latin aqua). In the Annales Fuldenses (872 AD) it is called Fuldaha; from 1113 AD it is
attested as Wultha. In the Chronica Boemorum (1125 AD) it is attested
for the first time in its Bohemian form, Wlitaua.
The Vltava River is 430.3 kilometres (267.4 mi) long and drains an area
of 28,090 square kilometres
(10,850 sq mi) in size, over half of
Bohemia and about a third of the
Czech Republic's entire territory. As
it runs through Prague, the river is
crossed by 18 bridges (including

Charles Bridge (Czech: Karlův most [ˈkarluːf ˈmost] ⓘ) is a medieval stone arch bridge that
crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under
the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the early 15th century. The bridge replaced
the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This
new bridge was originally called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský
most), but has been referred to as "Charles Bridge" since 1870.
The bridge is 516 metres (1,693 ft) long and nearly 10 metres (33 ft) wide.
Following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow
bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge
towers, two on the Lesser Quarter side (including the Malá Strana Bridge
Tower) and one on the Old Town side, the Old Town Bridge Tower. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700, but now all have been replaced by replicas.

Dag 3: Operaforestilling - Mozarts Cosi fan tutte

Handlingen sentrerer seg rundt to unge

fan tutte" å fascinere og engasjere operaelskere over hele verden.

1926' (1925)

The Sokol movement (from the Slavic
word for falcon) was a youth sport movement
and gymnastics organisation founded in 1862
by Miroslav Tyrš and Jindřich Fügner.
The Sokol played an important part in the
development of Czech nationalism through
the organisation of gymnastic festivals
called Slets.
This poster advertises a celebration
planned to coincide with the sporting
events, a pageant which would take
place on an island on the river Vltava
with spectators seated on both sides.
As it happened, the event nearly ended
in tragedy. Barges filled with singing
actors were struck by a strong gust of
wind on their way to the island. They
were separated from the boat towing
them and were carried down the river
by the wind towards a weir. Panic

Poster for the 'Lottery of the Union of Southwestern Moravia' (1912)

Mucha designed this poster to promote a lottery for raising funds for Czech schools
in southwestern Moravia.
Under Austria-Hungary's ruthless policy of Germanisation, the Czech language could
only be taught in private schools run by
local communities. These lottery tickets
were sold for one crown and the profits
went to support such private schools.
In the poster, Čechia, the symbolic mother
of the Czech nation, sits on a dead tree,
weeping helplessly. In the foreground, a
little school girl with books and pencils
stares accusingly at the viewers,
demanding support from them for her education and for the ailing Čechia.

The Church of Mother of God before Týn (in Czech Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem,
also Týnský chrám (Týn Church) or just Týn), often translated as Church of Our
Lady before Týn, is a Gothic church and a dominant feature of the Old Town of
Prague, Czech Republic. It has been the main church of this part of the city since
the 14th century
. The church's two towers are 80 m high, and each tower's spire is
topped by eight smaller spires in two layers of four.
In the 11th century, the Old Town plaza area was occupied by a Romanesque church,
which was built for foreign merchants coming to the nearby Týn Courtyard. It was
replaced by an early Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn in 1256. Construction of
the present church began in the 14th century. The church was designed in the late
Gothic style under the influence of Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler. By the
beginning of the 15th century, construction was almost complete; only the towers,
the gable and roof were missing. The church was controlled by Hussites for two
centuries, including John of Rokycan, future archbishop of Prague, who became the
church's vicar in 1427. The building was completed in the 1450s, while the gable
and northern tower were completed shortly thereafter during the reign of
George of Poděbrady (1453–1471).

The Jan Hus Memorial (Czech: Pomník mistra Jana Husa) stands at one end of
Old Town Square, Prague in the Czech Republic. The huge monument depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile 200 years
after Hus in the wake of the lost Battle of the White Mountain during the Thirty
Years' War, and a young mother who symbolises national rebirth.
The monument was so large that the sculptor designed and built his own villa and studio where the work could be carried out.
It was unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus'
martyrdom. The memorial was designed by Ladislav Šaloun and paid for solely
by public donations.
Born in 1369, Hus became an influential religious thinker, philosopher, and
reformer in Prague. He was a key predecessor to the Protestant movement of the sixteenth century. In his works he criticized religious moral decay of the Catholic
Church.

The Old Town Hall was established in 1338 as the seat of the Old Town
administration. The oldest part of the complex consists of the southern wing
a beautiful Gothic tower with a bay chapel and a unique astronomical
clock – known as the Orloj – where, every hour between 9 am and 11 pm, the
twelve apostles appear. The Gothic Revival eastern wing of the Town Hall was
destroyed during the Prague Uprising on May 8, 1945 and was never rebuilt.
The visitor route includes the chapel, historical halls, the underground areas
and the tower.
